Handyman horror stories are common. As the owner of a house built in 1925, I have had my share of bad experiences, some of them due to lack of diligence on my part, and I have learned a few lessons.
Ask what the handyman’s skills are. For example, if a carpenter is installing a countertop, competent though he may be, don’t ask him to do minor plumbing. I did this a number of years ago and had to call a plumber to redo the job after water poured from beneath a sink. Also, check the job when the work is done to make sure everything is OK.
Likewise,if you hire a handyman from a contract cleaning company , and they send a replacement, such as a son, brother, wife or friend without your approval in advance, don’t go along with it. Your residence isn’t a training site.
